About this position

Three postdoctoral research fellow positions are open at The University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Engineering, in the Thermal Energy Engineering Laboratory (Shiomi Laboratory). The project, titled Reverse Reflux AI Contributing to Innovation in Thermal Management Materials, is part of the JST AI for Science Innovative Research Promotion Program (ARiSE).

The successful candidates will join an international collaborative effort to develop new AI-driven research methods for thermal management materials, including heat dissipation materials and thermoelectric materials for semiconductor devices. Research themes include machine learning interatomic potentials, AI agents for autonomous prediction/calculation/synthesis/measurement, large-scale phonon property data generation, improvement of automated computing infrastructure, machine learning prediction of thermal conductivity, and experimental verification of AI-predicted materials using high-speed synthesis and precise thermal measurement.

The position is designed for researchers with interests in physics, materials science, chemistry, computer science, information science, or statistics. The lab welcomes applicants whose main specialty is not limited to one fixed field, provided they are eager to collaborate across disciplines and expand their expertise. A doctoral degree is required, and applicants must be able to conduct research in English. Nationality is not a requirement.

Appointees will be employed full-time by The University of Tokyo and will spend extended periods at partner institutions in Singapore and the United States during the employment period. The appointment is fixed-term, renewable annually, with a renewal limit through March 31, 2029. Salary is an annual income of 5 million to 7 million yen, including bonuses, under the university’s salary regulations.

To apply, submit a CV in the University of Tokyo format, a publication list highlighting three major papers, a research summary and plan (within two A4 pages), and the names, affiliations, and contact information of two recommenders. Applications are accepted via the JREC-IN portal web application. The application window runs from October 26, 2026 to December 31, 2026, and applications may close earlier once suitable candidates are found.
