About this position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is recruiting a full-time, on-site Ab Initio Nuclear Theory Postdoctoral Researcher in Livermore, California. The researcher will work in the Nuclear Data and Theory group within the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

The project focuses on ab initio nuclear structure and reaction theory, including the structure of exotic nuclei and low-energy reactions relevant to the Big Bang and other astrophysical settings. Responsibilities include developing theoretical and computational approaches, conducting numerical simulations on LLNL and national-laboratory supercomputers, combining many-body methods with high-performance computing and modern statistics, quantifying uncertainties, collaborating with internal and external scientists, presenting results, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to proposals.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics or a related field, obtained within five years of the anticipated start date. Experience in nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, astrophysical simulations, physics-code development, and collaborative research is required. Experience with few- or many-body methods, statistical or machine-learning approaches to uncertainty quantification, and C++, C, Fortran, Python, parallel programming, or large-scale HPC is advantageous.

The appointment may be extended to a maximum of three years and provides a salary of $123,048 annually, plus benefits, 401(k), relocation assistance, and education reimbursement. No security clearance is required, although assignments exceeding 179 days require a federal background investigation. Applicants must comply with applicable NDAA Section 3112 access restrictions and pass the required pre-employment drug test if selected. Apply online through the LLNL SmartRecruiters portal.
