About this position
Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland is offering a full-time temporary postdoctoral / assistant professor (Adiunkt) position within the ERC Advanced Grant 2024 project 101199807, funded through Horizon Europe – ERC.
The project explores a novel non-invasive approach to assessing tissue hypoxia using positronium imaging and quantum entanglement of photons. It builds on the idea that properties of positronium atoms produced during PET imaging may serve as biomarkers of tissue oxygenation. The research will examine whether annihilation processes involving oxygen can be distinguished from other positronium annihilation mechanisms in biological tissues, and whether correlations between photon polarization planes can reveal measurable information about hypoxia.
The work will be carried out using the J-PET tomographic system developed at Jagiellonian University under the direction of Prof. Paweł Moskal. J-PET is described as the first multi-photon tomograph capable of imaging positronium lifetime in humans and detecting photon polarization from positronium annihilation, enabling pioneering studies at the intersection of biomedical imaging, cancer research, and quantum physics.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in biological sciences or a related field and have experience in cancer cell biology, hypoxia, and research work in competitive projects. Skills in flow cytometry, qPCR, Western blotting, fluorescence microscopy, and 2D/3D cell cultures are advantageous. Strong English communication, analytical thinking, independence, teamwork, and interpersonal skills are required, together with eligibility criteria including a doctoral degree, relevant scientific achievements, and active participation in scientific life.
The position offers stable employment at a renowned university, access to research infrastructure, collaboration with an interdisciplinary scientific community, professional development support, and employee benefits. The application deadline is 1 October 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Warsaw), with the start date listed as 1 November 2026.
Applications should be submitted by email to [email protected]. For further information, contact Prof. Paweł Moskal at [email protected].
