About this position
This position is part of an ERC Advanced Grant project at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The project develops a novel non-invasive approach to assessing tissue hypoxia by combining positronium imaging with the quantum entanglement of photons.
The research investigates whether properties of positronium atoms formed during positron emission tomography can act as biomarkers of tissue oxygenation. A central theme is the study of positronium lifetime and annihilation processes in biological tissue, especially how they reflect the intracellular environment. The project also examines whether photon entanglement arising from positronium annihilation can reveal measurable information about hypoxia through correlations between photon polarization planes.
The successful candidate will work with the J-PET tomographic system, a unique multi-photon imaging platform developed at Jagiellonian University under the direction of Professor Paweł Moskal. J-PET is presented as the first tomograph of its kind capable of imaging positronium lifetime in humans and detecting photon polarization from positronium annihilation, enabling pioneering studies at the intersection of quantum phenomena and medical imaging.
The work is framed around improving understanding of how annihilation processes involving oxygen molecules differ from other positronium annihilation mechanisms in biological tissues. The expected outcome is a new imaging concept with potential relevance for hypoxia assessment and future tumour diagnostics using J-PET technology.
