About this position
This PhD position is part of the Cerebrovasculaire Ziekten research line in the Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery at UMC Utrecht. The project sits at the interface of neurology and radiology and focuses on innovative imaging of atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries.
The research aims to determine how inflammation caused by atherosclerosis can best be visualised with imaging. A key goal is to generate new insights that may support the clinical implementation of a new imaging marker for identifying high-risk plaques and improving the diagnosis and prevention of stroke.
You will work within a multidisciplinary team of vascular neurologists, radiologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons and biomedical researchers. The project combines CT image analysis with evaluation of perivascular fat measurements around the carotids, linked to histological plaque characteristics and clinical outcomes in patients.
The main emphasis of the work is on imaging analysis rather than histopathology. Your activities will include analysing patient CT scans, processing imaging data, correlating findings with tissue and clinical results, interpreting study outcomes, writing scientific papers and presenting findings at national and international conferences.
The role offers an intensive supervision environment and close collaboration across several clinical and research disciplines in a highly translational academic medical centre.
