About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher / Assistant position in the Department of Brain Biochemistry at the Maj Institute of Pharmacology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow, Poland.

The project is part of the National Science Centre OPUS 30 grant, “Efficacy of catechol betaxanthins in counteracting dopaminergic neurodegeneration”. The research focuses on neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of catechol betaxanthins in in vitro and in vivo models of Parkinson’s disease. The postdoctoral researcher will mainly contribute to advanced in vitro work using primary midbrain dopaminergic neuron cultures and human iPSC-derived systems, including neuron and neuron-glia co-cultures and potentially forebrain organoids.

Key activities include establishing and maintaining primary dopaminergic neuron cultures, culturing and differentiating human iPSC, optimizing iPSC-based models, supporting the setup of an iPSC culture laboratory, and conducting neuroprotective validation experiments with high-content imaging. The role also involves participation in animal experiments, data analysis and visualization, research reporting, manuscript preparation, and conference presentations.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a PhD in a relevant biological, medical, pharmaceutical, neuroscience, cell biology or related field; documented experience in advanced in vitro cell culture and immunofluorescence/immunocytochemistry; at least one first-authored original paper in a JCR-indexed journal; completed animal procedures training required under Polish law; strong spoken and written English; and exemplary ethical conduct. Additional advantages include experience with human stem cells, neuronal differentiation, organoid culture, Parkinson’s disease models, confocal microscopy, high-content imaging, quantitative image analysis, international collaboration, and animal models of neurodegenerative disease.

Funding and appointment: full-time employment for 24 months, with salary according to NCN regulations at PLN 180,000 gross gross per year. The planned start is November/December 2026, negotiable with the selected candidate.

Application deadline: 21 October 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Warsaw). Applications should be emailed to [email protected] with the specified competition title in the subject line. Required documents include a cover letter, candidate information forms, CV with publications and ORCID, PhD diploma, short self-report, training certificate, at least one reference letter, and supporting documents for any claim of career breaks or research stay abroad.

Institution and location: Maj Institute of Pharmacology, Polish Academy of Sciences, 12 Smętna Street, Krakow, Poland.

The PhD must be from an institution other than IP PAS, or the candidate must have completed at least a 9-month continuous documented research stay at a different institution in a different country during or after doctoral studies. Candidates must not receive other NCN-funded direct-cost salary, must not be employed elsewhere under an employment contract (including outside Poland), and must not receive retirement or equivalent benefits. Required experience includes advanced in vitro cell culture, immunofluorescence or immunocytochemistry, at least one first-authored original JCR paper, completion of animal procedures/euthanasia training under Polish law, advanced English, and exemplary ethical conduct. Preferred assets include human stem cell culture, neuronal differentiation or organoid culture, primary dopaminergic neuron cultures, Parkinson’s disease models, confocal microscopy, high-content imaging, quantitative image analysis, independent research experience, international collaboration, animal models of neurodegenerative diseases, and Polish language skills.
