About this position
Postdoctoral opportunity in atmospheric physics and geosciences at the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw. The position is titled Assistant Professor W/M (Post-Doc) in the Atmospheric Physics Department and is part of the Magnetism Department at the Institute of Geophysics PAS. The project focuses on the local coupling of atmosphere and ocean on a diurnal time scale in various mesoscale circulation regimes, with a strong emphasis on air-sea interactions, atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers, stratification, diurnal cycle processes, and energy and momentum fluxes.
Research context: The successful candidate will work on observations and analysis of atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), comparing collected in-situ measurements with auxiliary datasets, numerical models, reanalyses, and satellite data. A specific task is adaptation of GNSS antennas and receivers on UAVs to derive atmospheric moisture properties. The role also includes presenting findings at seminars and scientific conferences and preparing research publications.
Funding and duration: The postdoc is funded by the NCN OPUS 24 grant UMO-2022/47/B/ST10/02892. The position is full-time, with compensation of about 10,000 PLN gross per month (around 7,200 PLN net), and employment is offered for a maximum of 7 months starting before 1 December 2026. The call is not funded by an EU research programme.
Eligibility and requirements: Candidates should have a PhD in Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a closely related area such as atmospheric physics, physical oceanography, meteorology, or climatology. The institution asks for documented advanced knowledge in atmospheric physics and/or physical oceanography, particularly boundary layer dynamics, experience in GNSS meteorology, familiarity with in-situ measurement campaigns and numerical modeling, excellent command of meteorological/oceanographic data formats such as netCDF and HDF, good programming skills, and fluency in English. NCN postdoc eligibility rules also apply, including the requirement that the doctorate was awarded by a different institution than the host.
How to apply: Submit your materials electronically to [email protected] by 6 November 2026 at 16:00 CET. The email subject should state “POST-DOC OPUS-24”. Required documents include a cover letter, proof of PhD, CV with scientific, educational, and organizational achievements, publication list, awards and internships, electronic copies of two key publications, and other supporting documents if desired.
Supervisor and contact: The research will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Dariusz Baranowski ([email protected]). Additional contact email provided in the posting is [email protected]; the general contact in the advert also lists [email protected].
