About this position
NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology is offering a PhD Candidate position in Electrochemistry at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Trondheim, Norway.
The position is part of the HYDROGENi centre for hydrogen technology, a collaborative research environment focused on environment-friendly energy research with strong links to industry and leading universities. The project centres on electrochemistry for the green transition, with an emphasis on performance and degradation analysis of electrocatalyst layers for alkaline electrolyte membrane water electrolysis.
The successful candidate will work with experimental electrochemistry, including voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, chronoamperometry, and in-situ methods. The project also includes degradation studies using in-situ ICP-MS, manufacture of electrocatalytic layers, and structural and morphological characterization using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The role includes analysis of results, communication with industry and the research community, scientific reporting, conference participation, and contribution to the research group, including mentoring master’s students.
Applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree in chemistry, nanotechnology, materials science, physics, or a related field, with a substantial independent project equivalent to a master’s thesis. A strong academic record is required, along with relevant hands-on experience in experimental electrochemistry and nanotechnology, cell assembly, and single-cell test stations. Fluent written and oral English is required, and Scandinavian language skills are considered an advantage.
The position is a full-time temporary PhD appointment. The normal gross salary is NOK 580,000 per year, and the doctoral work period is three years. Admission to the PhD programme in Materials Science and Engineering is required within three months of the employment start date.
Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no by 16 November 2026. Required attachments include academic transcripts and diplomas, CV, master’s thesis or draft, motivation letter, relevant publications and certificates if available, and contact information for three referees. Internationally educated applicants should include documentation of the scope and quality of their education, such as a diploma supplement or HK-dir statement if available.
