About this position
Biology Research Fellowship at the U.S. Department of Defense
This research fellowship places the selected participant at the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command – Soldier Center (DEVCOM-SC) in Natick, Massachusetts, working within an ORISE-administered program focused on organoid and cell biology. The project centers on gut-health-related research, including nutritional physiology, immune system modulation, and gastrointestinal cell culture.
The fellow will help establish and use intestinal organoid in vitro models to investigate how intestinal epithelial cells respond to military-relevant stressors and to identify potential nutritional countermeasures. Research activities may include a mix of laboratory and analytical methods such as qPCR, ELISA, confocal microscopy, omics-based approaches, immunoblotting, biostatistics, AI/ML-supported analysis, and organ-on-chip technologies.
In this role, the participant will work under mentor guidance in a research environment that supports hands-on training, scientific communication, and data-driven experimentation. The experience is designed to build practical skills in 3D organoid culture, organoid biology and nutrition studies, presentations, briefings, manuscript preparation, and data analysis.
The hosting center, DEVCOM-SC, is part of the Army’s research, development, testing, and evaluation enterprise and focuses on soldier-related science and technology. The fellowship is positioned within that broader applied research setting, with an emphasis on human performance optimization and biologically informed solutions relevant to soldier health.
This is a Master's or Doctoral research fellowship with a start date anticipated for August 2026.
