About this position
The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory Flight Sciences Branch is seeking researchers to contribute to ongoing work in aeroballistics and the control of guided and unguided Army munitions. The opening is centered on flight dynamics and control, with emphasis on understanding how munitions respond to aerodynamic forces and moments and how those responses can be shaped to improve range, accuracy, and survivability in flight.
The research scope spans both unguided and guided flight. On the unguided side, the branch studies stability, drag, and delivery errors related to fire control, aim, jump, and dispersion. On the guided side, the work addresses control actuation systems for fins and canards, as well as rocket-based maneuver methods such as thrust vectoring. The project also extends to advanced control approaches that help Army projectiles maneuver effectively when state information, control authority, and flight conditions are limited or changing.
A major part of the research environment is the use of 6-DOF guided flight models to connect component flight, control, and sensor models into a system-level understanding. The branch also uses hardware-in-the-loop methods to evaluate prototype control actuation systems and developmental control algorithms across the flight envelope. In addition, coupled CFD/RBD modeling supports analysis of complex projectile flight, especially under unsteady flow conditions.
The specific project described in the advert focuses on increasing autonomy in Army weapon vehicles through intelligent control methods. The work will investigate decision-making capabilities for weapon-target assignment, including path planning, cooperative networking, and fault tolerance, and will develop a simulation environment to implement and demonstrate the proposed control methods.
Research advisors named in the advert are Benjamin Gruenwald and Joshua Bryson at ARL.
