About this position
This ORISE fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta places a participant in the ATSDR Office of Innovation and Analytics (OIA) to support scientific methods and analytical approaches that advance environmental and public health work.
The training is centered on hands-on use of computational, data science, and other analytical tools, along with software and open-source resources, to evaluate, analyze, interpret, and communicate scientific information. The participant will engage with literature reviews, technical report preparation, oral communication, and scientific communication for both technical and non-technical audiences.
The fellowship offers exposure to several parts of the office’s work, including the Simulation Science Section (SSS), Toxicology Section (TS), and the Geospatial Research, Analysis, and Services Program (GRASP). Within these groups, the participant may explore micro- and nanoplastics, machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in environmental health, risk assessment, data visualization, map production, and geospatial analysis relevant to environmental exposure and emergency response.
The role is mentored by Patricia Ruiz and is designed to develop a broad understanding of innovative scientific approaches that support ATSDR’s mission to protect communities from harmful environmental exposures.
