About this position
This fellowship is hosted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Commissioner, Public Health Strategy and Analysis Staff in Silver Spring, Maryland. The project is embedded in FDA’s regulatory science mission and focuses on applied data science and AI in a policy and operational environment.
The fellowship is organized around four linked project areas. In research and data analysis, the participant will investigate topics such as drug competition, FDA regulatory pathways, and global health, while working with complex datasets, analytical methods, and relational databases including SQL and PostgreSQL, with potential use of cloud platforms such as Databricks. In AI adoption and integration, the fellow will help examine how AI tools can be evaluated, piloted, and scaled in a regulatory setting, contributing to frameworks for responsible AI use and working with machine learning methods and large language model approaches. In pilot and proof-of-concept applications, the participant will collaborate with FDA staff to build tools that improve internal processes and analytical workflows using R and Python in environments such as RStudio, JupyterLab, and RSConnect. In data visualization, the fellow will develop interactive dashboards and visual analytics with tools such as Plotly, Dash, and R Shiny to help FDA staff explore and communicate complex datasets.
The research environment combines mentorship from FDA subject matter experts with exposure to cross-agency collaboration, training activities, seminars, workshops, and policy meetings. The fellowship is designed to build practical experience at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence, public health policy, and regulatory science.
