About this position
This postdoctoral fellowship places the selected researcher with the Zoonosis and Discovery Team in the Coronavirus and Respiratory Viruses Laboratory Branch of CDC’s Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, within the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The project is centered on advanced laboratory approaches for detecting, characterizing, and discovering known, emerging, and novel viruses associated with respiratory disease, outbreaks, zoonotic investigations, and cases of unknown etiology.
The fellow will work in an interdisciplinary public health laboratory environment alongside virologists, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, epidemiologists, and other public health professionals. Research activities span method development and optimization, high-throughput sequencing workflows, assay evaluation, and the application of molecular and sequencing tools to outbreak and surveillance specimens. The position emphasizes viral genomics and pathogen discovery in a real-world public health setting.
Training includes advanced molecular methods, next-generation sequencing, viral genomics, and analytical workflows for sequence interpretation. The fellow may contribute to PCR-based sequencing, targeted sequencing, enrichment-based sequencing, metagenomic sequencing, and the evaluation of emerging sequencing platforms and laboratory technologies. The role also involves laboratory quality management, specimen handling, biosafety, and communication of scientific findings through reports, posters, presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts.
The fellowship is tailored to the participant’s background, interests, and professional development goals while keeping a strong focus on public health laboratory science, viral discovery, and genomic analysis.
