About this position
This research opportunity is with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, within the Epidemiology and Laboratory Workforce Branch of the Division of Workforce Development in the Public Health Infrastructure Center. The selected participant will train in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), CDC’s applied epidemiology fellowship environment, and will work on the EIS Fellowship and Response Support Team (FRST) under the mentorship of Grace Appiah.
The opportunity is centered on supporting public health workforce development and emergency response activities. The fellow will gain exposure to CDC offices, programs, and partners involved in preparedness and response, while contributing to work that supports the operations of the EIS fellowship. A major part of the role involves managing and working with databases for Epi-Aid investigation data, alongside tasks that build skills in communication, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, teamwork, and evaluation.
The position is designed as a hands-on, fast-paced training experience in a national public health setting. The fellow will collaborate with CDC staff and strengthen technical and practical abilities in science and operations, database management, communication and facilitation, partnership building, analysis, and evaluation methods. The project scope can be adapted to the participant’s background and career interests within applied public health and workforce development.
The posting describes CDC’s broader mission and the role of the Division of Workforce Development in advancing the public health workforce through evidence-based programs and strong partnerships. It also notes that the fellowship provides broad exposure to emergency response and preparedness work across CDC, making it a strong fit for candidates interested in applied epidemiology, public health operations, and workforce-focused research support.
