About this position
The Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA) at the University of Cologne offers a structured doctoral programme in the highly interdisciplinary field of ageing biology. It is run in cooperation with the CECAD Cluster of Excellence, University Hospital Cologne, the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, and the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research.
The programme is designed to train a new generation of biomedical scientists focused on the basic biology of ageing and on translating fundamental discoveries into better health and quality of life in later years. Research areas span DNA damage and repair, genetics and epigenetics, immunology and inflammation, membrane and lipid biology, metabolism and nutrient sensing, mitochondrial biology, neuroscience and neurodegeneration, protein homeostasis, RNA metabolism, stem cells and tissue regeneration, systems biology and bioinformatics, and tumour biology.
CGA provides excellent research conditions in an international English-language environment, with intensive supervision, state-of-the-art facilities, and a strong emphasis on mentoring and career development. Students benefit from scientific and professional skills courses, lecture series, journal clubs, scientific retreats, career counselling, and alumni mentoring. During an on-site recruitment week, candidates may visit up to five laboratories of their choice.
The doctoral programme is full-time and lasts eight semesters, with the three-year PhD track starting individually between 1 July and 1 October. Up to 12 candidates are selected. The posting also notes a Master’s fellowship programme for BSc holders, offering hands-on training in ageing research and access to CGA mentors and events at an early stage.
Tuition fees are not charged. The application window for PhD positions usually opens in mid-August and closes in November; the Master’s fellowship call usually opens in April and closes mid-July. Interested applicants should follow the programme website for the annual call and detailed application instructions.
