About this position
This research opportunity at the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory focuses on the control of structurally adaptive small unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The project is centered on enabling unusual and highly maneuverable flight behaviors for Army-relevant small aircraft operating in congested, low-altitude environments.
The work addresses the control challenges created by compliant and adaptive structures designed for complex behaviors such as high-speed object avoidance, perching, and soaring. A major goal is to support the flight demonstration of novel UAS behaviors that are typically difficult to automate or not currently possible with conventional aircraft control approaches.
The selected researcher will work on translating theoretical or simulation-based control methods into experimental hardware platforms, including quad-copters, fixed-wing systems, or hybrid aircraft developed experimentally. The project also involves developing real-time dynamics models for these aircraft and contributing to the design of custom structural effectors used for aerodynamic control.
The environment is within the Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD), where the broader research mission spans propulsion and flight physics, advanced materials, and related technologies for defense applications. The position is advised by Dr. Todd C. Henry.

What's required
Applicants must have received a doctoral degree within the last 60 months. The opportunity is open to any academic level within the stated eligibility, but the discipline requirement is Engineering. Candidates should have expertise in transitioning theoretical or simulation-based controllers to experimental hardware platforms, and should be comfortable working in C++, Python, or similar programming languages. A completed application requires a CV or resume, three references, and transcripts verifying receipt of the degree; if selected, the participant must also prepare a research proposal for the ARL-RAP review panel.
How to apply
Apply through the Zintellect opportunity page and complete the online application. Upload your CV or resume, transcripts, and provide three references through the reference-form link sent after application submission. If selected by an advisor, you will later submit a research proposal via the provided upload link.
