About this position
The Biomedical and Astronomical Signal Processing (BASP) laboratory at Heriot-Watt University, led by Professor Yves Wiaux, is recruiting a PhD student to conduct research on deep learning for black hole imaging. The BASP lab is renowned for its work in computational imaging, spanning theory, algorithms, and diverse applications. This position is part of major UK Research Council-funded projects aimed at developing next-generation image reconstruction and analysis algorithms that integrate deep learning, optimisation, and Bayesian sampling. These algorithms will deliver high resolution and dynamic range imaging, calibration, uncertainty quantification, and scalability to large image sizes and data volumes, with applications in both astronomy and medicine.
The PhD project will specifically focus on creating efficient and scalable methodologies for imaging black holes at high resolution and dynamic range using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and its future upgrades. Research activities will include developing image reconstruction algorithms for large-scale inverse problems, uncertainty estimation, and applying these methods to EHT data. The project is jointly supervised by Professor Yves Wiaux at Heriot-Watt University and Dr. Akiyama, EHT's Deputy Project Scientist at MIT Haystack Observatory.
The successful candidate will be fully integrated into the BASP group and collaborate with international partners. The scholarship is fully funded for 3.5 years and is open to international students, with a flexible start date in 2026. Applicants should have a first class Master’s degree (or equivalent) in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or a related discipline.
To apply, candidates should send a single PDF containing a motivation letter, transcript, CV, and names of two references to Prof. Wiaux by email. Screening of applications begins in December 2025 and continues until the position is filled.
