About this position
Digital Engineering Transformation with AI and Digital Twins - Research Fellowship at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Systems Engineering Department offers a research-focused opportunity in defense-relevant digital engineering. The fellowship is centered on the transformation of how defense systems are designed, developed, delivered, operated, and sustained through digital engineering, with an emphasis on creating executable, high-fidelity system architectures and experiment-ready digital twins that represent both systems and their operational missions.
The project specifically highlights work on AI-enabled autonomous systems, multi-UAS operations, and mobility-assisted networking. The selected fellow will work within a systems engineering environment that supports the U.S. Navy, the Department of Defense, and allied armed forces, contributing to research aligned with modernization goals. The role includes hands-on engagement with model-based systems engineering and digital engineering tools, including System Composer, and may involve constructing system and mission architectures.
The fellowship also points to integration of these architectures with third-party simulation environments for operational context, alongside use of domain-specific modeling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or data-driven AI/ML models to improve fidelity. The research environment is framed around advanced naval and defense applications, with mentorship and exposure to digital engineering practice in a U.S. defense research setting.
