About this position
Technische Universität Chemnitz is offering a fully funded doctoral candidate / PhD position in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Professorship Micromanufacturing Technology, within the MicroMan4Health doctoral network. The project topic is “EDM Machining-State Analysis from Discharge Signal Data” and is focused on developing an assisting tool for electrical discharge machining (EDM) to better understand machining states and deposition characteristics from discharge signal data.
The research aims to create a data-driven method for analysing real-time discharge signals, correlating pulse voltage/current signals and discharge behaviour with material removal and surface functionalization, and predicting machining results with improved process stability and fewer experimental iterations. A central application is the integration of antibacterial coating strategies for medical-implant machining and new tool–workpiece material combinations.
The position is part of the MicroMan4Health doctoral network, which includes 15 doctoral candidate positions and connects universities and research institutes across several countries, with industrial secondments built into the training structure. The network is funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe / Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Grant Agreement No. 101312169). The advertised role is for 3 years and is stated as a 100% position with salary plus allowances according to MSCA Doctoral Networks rules.
Eligibility highlights include a completed Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related science/engineering discipline. Applicants should have experience with experimental research, very good English skills, and strong motivation for interdisciplinary and international collaboration. MSCA mobility rules apply: candidates must not have lived in Germany for more than 12 months in the three years before October 2026, and they must not already hold a PhD.
The application deadline is 30 September 2026. Applications must be submitted via the university’s online portal; email applications will not be considered. Required materials include a motivation letter, academic CV, diplomas, transcripts, an English summary of the Master’s thesis, proof of English proficiency if available, publication list if applicable, and reference details. The position is based at Chemnitz University of Technology in Chemnitz, Germany.
