About this position

ETH Zurich is offering a doctoral position in the Optical Materials Engineering Laboratory led by Prof. David J. Norris in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT). The project focuses on the experimental characterization of semiconductor nanocrystals, combining optical spectroscopy, microscopy, electron microscopy, and structural analysis to understand how size, shape, composition, surface chemistry, and atomic-scale structure govern optical behavior.

The research is centered on semiconductor nanocrystals, especially CdSe magic-sized nanocrystals at the start of the project, with later expansion to other systems including different sizes, core/shell structures, and InP nanocrystals. A major goal is to determine how closely these materials approach atomic-scale perfection and how their structural variations affect emission linewidths, excited-state dynamics, spectral fluctuations, and single-photon emission performance. The work uses ensemble and single-particle spectroscopy to quantify optical heterogeneity and identify the conditions that produce highly uniform optical properties.

In parallel, the doctoral student will apply advanced structural methods, including cryogenic electron microscopy and single-particle analysis, to reconstruct nanocrystal three-dimensional structure with near-atomic resolution. This includes investigation of nanocrystal shape, possible tetrahedral truncation, and the influence of isolation procedures and surface treatments. The characterization results will directly inform collaboration with synthesis and theory specialists, helping improve synthesis protocols and structural control of nanocrystals.

The position is embedded in a highly collaborative and international research environment at ETH Zurich, with access to state-of-the-art optical microscopy, spectroscopy, laser, detector, cryogenic, and electron microscopy facilities. The student will also participate in general laboratory activities and may contribute to teaching and the supervision of bachelor’s and master’s students. The appointment is full-time for four years and is conditional on admission to the ETH Zurich doctoral program.

Applicants should have, or be close to completing, an MSc in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, nanoscience, physics, or a closely related field. A strong experimental and quantitative background is expected, and experience in spectroscopy, microscopy, electron microscopy, image processing, three-dimensional reconstruction, data analysis, or programming is advantageous.
