About this position
ETH Zürich is offering a fully funded doctoral position in Experimental Ultrafast Optics and Photonics within the Ultrafast Dynamics Group. The project is part of the newly funded ETH Collaborative Grant Shaping Time-Interfaces with Terahertz Subwavelength Confinement, a collaborative effort involving the groups of Prof. Steven Johnson, Prof. Giacomo Scalari, and Prof. Alexander Dikopoltsev.
The research aims to investigate how ultrafast temporal modulation of electromagnetic media can be used to manipulate light in new ways. By combining ultrafast optical excitation with subwavelength terahertz waveguides, the project will study time interfaces, time reflection, and photonic time crystals. This is a frontier topic in photonics and electromagnetism, with strong links to ultrafast science, nanophotonics, and terahertz wave physics.
The doctoral researcher will develop and implement novel experiments to probe time-varying electromagnetic media. Planned work includes optical pump-probe spectroscopy, generation and phase-resolved detection of broadband terahertz pulses, characterization of subwavelength THz waveguides with project partners, advanced optical instrumentation, data analysis, and numerical modelling. The role is highly experimental and interdisciplinary, with close collaboration across participating ETH research groups.
Supervision will be provided by Prof. Steven Johnson and Dr. Martina Basini. The position is based at ETH Zürich in Switzerland, one of the world’s leading universities for science and technology, with world-class research infrastructure and a collaborative environment for cutting-edge photonics research.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in experimental physics, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, enthusiasm for advanced experimental techniques, programming experience (Python, MATLAB, or similar), and excellent English communication skills. Prior experience in ultrafast optics or terahertz spectroscopy is helpful but not required.
The position is fully funded for four years.
