About this position

Empa is advertising a fully funded PhD position in vibrational and optoelectronic properties of quasi-1D chalcogenides within the Nanomaterials Spectroscopy and Imaging Group at the Transport at Nanoscale Interfaces Laboratory.

The project focuses on quasi-1D (Ba,Sr)(Ti,Nb,Ta)(S,Se)3 chalcogenides, a family of semiconductors with strong optical anisotropy and collective electronic phenomena such as charge-density-wave order. The research will study how composition, defects and chain alignment influence vibrational, optical and carrier-dynamic properties in single crystals and orientation-controlled thin films.

Planned methods include Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), polarization- and temperature-dependent measurements, time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), terahertz spectroscopy and transient absorption. The role also involves data analysis, collaboration with synthesis/theory/device partners, and publishing and presenting results at journals and conferences.

The position is based at Empa in Dübendorf, near Zurich, Switzerland, and is part of a collaborative project with FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg funded by SNF and DPG. The PhD will be enrolled at the University of Basel.

Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, nanoscience or a closely related field; strong interest in optical spectroscopy, semiconductor physics and low-dimensional or quantum materials; programming/data-analysis skills such as Python or MATLAB are an advantage; excellent English; and willingness to collaborate internationally and undertake a research stay abroad.

Application is via the Empa job portal only. Applicants should submit a motivation letter, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons.
