About this position
ETH Zürich is offering a doctoral position in mid-infrared integrated photonics and optical sensing within the Optical Nanomaterial Laboratory in the Physics Department. The project sits at the intersection of integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, with a strong emphasis on designing and demonstrating photonic devices for highly sensitive and selective molecular detection.
The doctoral researcher will work across the full device-development cycle: building numerical models, designing photonic layouts, contributing to micro- and nanofabrication in the cleanroom, and carrying out optical and electrical measurements. The research also includes MIR optical characterization, spectroscopy experiments, and data analysis. This is a hands-on experimental PhD with access to advanced cleanroom facilities, photonics laboratories, simulation tools, and state-of-the-art MIR measurement equipment.
The topic is relevant to applications in environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, industrial process control, and fundamental research. Students interested in integrated photonic-device engineering, waveguide optics, nanophotonics, spectroscopy, and experimental photonics will find the project especially suitable.
The position is fully funded and offered in an international, interdisciplinary research environment at ETH Zurich. The successful candidate should be highly motivated, curious, rigorous, and creative.
