About this position

The University of Fine Arts Hamburg (HFBK) offers a doctoral programme leading to the degree of Dr phil in Art (philosophiae in artibus). The programme is rooted in the university’s transdisciplinary approach and supports dissertations that examine the arts, their preconditions, contexts, and functions from multiple perspectives.

Research may focus on artistic works themselves or on the historical, social, media-related, and cultural processes that shape artistic discourse. The programme also welcomes doctoral projects that engage with art-theoretical or philosophical concepts through which the arts reflect on themselves and articulate their own understanding.

In addition to purely scholarly dissertations, HFBK Hamburg also promotes projects with a strong artistic component, provided that the relationship between the artistic work and the academic contribution is clearly articulated. The programme is described as structured, with research discussion and supervision as part of the doctoral environment.

The course is based in Hamburg and is taught in both German and English, with language arrangements tailored to students’ needs. It is a full-time doctoral programme with a standard duration of six semesters.
