About this position

Graduate School Language & Literature Munich at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is a structured doctoral environment for research in linguistics, literature, language education, and cultural studies/cultural history.

The programme is organized into four classes: Language, Literature, Language Education, and Culture and History. Each class supports doctoral projects in its own area while contributing to a wider interdisciplinary setting within the Faculty of Languages and Literatures.

Doctoral candidates in the Class of Language work on linguistic theory, language use, and their interrelation, with projects ranging from general linguistic studies to comparative approaches and the analysis of particular languages in synchronic or historical perspective.

The Class of Literature provides a framework for literary studies as a core discipline in cultural and media research, with a broad range of theoretical and methodological perspectives. The Class of Language Education focuses on the processes and outcomes of teaching and learning language, literature, and culture across first, second, and foreign languages, including classroom research and historical, theoretical, or empirical work in didactics.

The Class of Culture and History enables doctoral research on major questions in the history, culture, media, politics, and society of the United States, Canada, and the Americas, including the Caribbean. The programme explicitly aims to frame the Americas beyond colonial and nation-state boundaries and place them in a context of global interdependencies.

The graduate school offers access to internationally renowned scholars, local, national, and international resources, and LMU’s research-driven infrastructure. Additional support is provided by the GraduateCenter, and the programme also offers structured research and supervision, research training, discussion, and a buddy programme for international doctoral candidates.
