About this position
The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Energy and Green House Gas Modelling within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM). This international research university offers a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market.
The successful candidate will develop a generalized greenhouse gas (GHG) model across all sectors, integrating it with the sector coupled energy model UCB-SEnMod. The spatial and time-resolved combined model will provide a holistic view of direct and indirect GHG emissions, considering renewable energy integrations. Responsibilities include establishing requirements, designing and coding the GHG module, extracting workflows and data from literature, scenario design for GHG reduction, maintaining documentation and version control, preparing the module for open source use, data analysis, figure preparation, manuscript and report drafting, and presenting results at international conferences. Collaboration with internal partners such as the Luxembourg Centre for Socio-Environmental Systems and external partners like Trier University of Applied Sciences is expected.
Supervision will be provided by Prof. Phillip Dale (University of Luxembourg) and Prof. te Heesen (Trier University of Applied Sciences) as part of a cotutelle arrangement. Applicants should have a Master's degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, environmental sciences or a related field, familiarity with Python or similar programming languages and AI tools, strong fundamentals in physical processes, excellent problem-solving skills, and initiative. B2-level proficiency in the thesis language is required, with accepted certificates as specified by the university.
The position offers a fixed-term contract of 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), based at the Belval Campus. The yearly gross salary is EUR 43445. The University provides a modern, dynamic, and inclusive atmosphere, exceptional research environment, and cooperation with European institutions, innovative companies, and a wide range of non-academic partners.
Application materials include a CV, cover letter, transcript of university-level courses, portfolio or list of relevant projects, and a one-page proposal outlining your approach to the project. Early application is encouraged as applications are processed upon reception. Applications must be submitted online through the HR system; email applications will not be considered.
