About this position
The University of Duisburg-Essen in Duisburg, Germany, is recruiting a Doctoral Researcher in the Particle Science and Technology group within the Faculty of Engineering.
The researcher will join the DFG-funded project “Uncovering the Interplay Between Iron-Oxide Nanoparticles and Nickel Substrates for Alkaline Oxygen Evolution.” The project examines how α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 interact with nickel substrates and affect catalytic activity during the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER).
Research activities include iron-oxide nanoparticle synthesis and characterization, catalyst-ink preparation, electrode coating, electrochemical testing, and advanced materials characterization. The work will connect nanoparticle properties and FeOx/Ni interfacial structures with electrocatalytic performance, supporting research in electrocatalysis, electrochemistry, materials science, particle technology and sustainable energy conversion.
Applicants should have an above-average master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics or a related field. Experience in nanoparticle synthesis, materials characterization, electrochemical measurements or electrode preparation is desirable. Strong English communication skills, motivation, reliability, systematic independent working habits and teamwork ability are expected.
The position starts on 1 February 2027, is initially for 36 months with possible extension, and is offered at 100% working time under TV-L 13, with part-time employment possible. The role provides the opportunity to pursue a doctoral qualification and is associated with a stated gross salary range of €59,324–€84,319, plus university employment benefits.
Applications must be submitted digitally by 25 November 2026, quoting reference number 526-26, to Dr. Mohaned Hammad by email.
