About this position
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is offering a three-year PhD student position in the Erlangen Center for Interface Research and Catalysis, within the group of Prof. Joerg Libuda. The project, based in Erlangen, Germany, investigates new concepts and materials for highly selective catalytic (de)functionalization reactions.
The research will use in situ and operando approaches to study real and model catalysts, with particular emphasis on infrared spectroscopy techniques including DRIFTS and PM-IRAS. The successful researcher may also use scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy to understand the effects of catalytic modifiers, additives, and activation procedures and establish structure-property relationships.
Responsibilities include designing and performing experiments, analyzing measurements, developing robust data-analysis workflows, collaborating in an interdisciplinary team, presenting results at conferences, contributing to manuscripts, and mentoring students. The position provides access to advanced laboratories, instrumentation, and interactions with synchrotron facilities in an international research environment.
Applicants need a diploma or master's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or chemical engineering. Previous expertise in in situ or operando methods is advantageous but not essential. Flexibility, commitment, communication skills, and effective teamwork are valued. Applications should include a motivation letter, CV, academic certificates and transcripts, publication list, language certificate, referee details, and a research-experience summary.
The position starts on December 1, 2026, and the application deadline is November 30, 2026. Applications must be submitted through the FAU BITE recruitment portal.
