The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory at the University of Oulu is seeking a doctoral researcher to join a research environment focused on space weather, the near-Earth environment, and Arctic geophysics. The role is embedded in the SafeEarth research programme and centres on understanding how solar activity drives disturbances in the Earth's upper atmosphere and magnetic environment, especially at high latitudes where these effects can create natural hazards. The successful candidate will work ...

VAW Glaciology at ETH Zurich is hiring a Doctoral Student in Glaciology and Glacial Hazards for the #ICEFAL project, a Swiss-French collaboration focused on how rising ice temperatures affect the stability of cold hanging glaciers and their potential to trigger large ice avalanches. The project combines field measurements at high-elevation sites in the Swiss and French Alps with numerical modelling to build a data-driven hazard index for hanging glaciers. This is a strong fit for students intere...

About this position

Doctoral Researcher in Space Physics is being recruited at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO), University of Oulu, Finland. The successful candidate will be based at the Linnanmaa campus in Oulu and will pursue doctoral studies within the SafeEarth research programme, funded by the Research Council of Finland.

The research focuses on space weather, auroral phenomena, the upper atmosphere, geomagnetic disturbances, and their effects on critical technological infrastructure and society. The doctoral researcher will analyse auroral imaging data and related geophysical observations from SGO measurement networks, investigate physical processes connecting aurora with space-weather impacts in the near-Earth environment, and contribute to understanding natural hazards at high latitudes. Duties also include publishing in international journals, presenting at conferences, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary SafeEarth consortium.

Applicants should hold a relevant degree in space physics, physics, astronomy, atmospheric sciences, data science, geophysics, or a related field. Experience with scientific data analysis and preferably Python is expected, along with strong English communication skills, research motivation, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Familiarity with optical instrumentation, imaging techniques, Linux, embedded systems, or Raspberry Pi platforms is advantageous. The candidate must meet University of Oulu Graduate School admission requirements and apply for doctoral study rights at the beginning of employment.

The full-time position lasts three years from 1 January 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter, with a starting gross salary of approximately €2,600–€3,200 per month before taxes. The application deadline is 30 November 2026 at 23:59 Finnish time. Applicants should submit an English cover letter, CV, and an initial research plan of up to two pages through the recruitment system.
