About this position
The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory at the University of Oulu is seeking a doctoral researcher to join a research environment focused on space weather, the near-Earth environment, and Arctic geophysics. The role is embedded in the SafeEarth research programme and centres on understanding how solar activity drives disturbances in the Earth's upper atmosphere and magnetic environment, especially at high latitudes where these effects can create natural hazards.
The successful candidate will work with the observatory’s internationally recognized measurement networks and research infrastructures, with a particular emphasis on auroral imaging data and related geophysical observations. The project aims to improve scientific understanding of the links between aurora, space weather, and impacts on critical technological infrastructure and society.
The doctoral researcher will be based at the University of Oulu’s Linnanmaa campus in Oulu and will contribute to the research activities of the multidisciplinary SafeEarth consortium. The position offers the chance to analyse real observational data, develop new insight into space weather-related natural hazards, and communicate results through scientific publications and conference presentations.
It is a research-focused doctoral opportunity in a supportive academic environment with close collaboration across an international team.
