About this position

INFLUENCE is an MSCA Doctoral Network, “Legacies, Interdependencies, Power: Russian Influences in the European Periphery,” bringing together five universities across Europe to study Russian influence in Europe through interdisciplinary research, advanced methods training, and engagement with policy stakeholders.

The University of Helsinki project, “Teaching Authoritarianism: Russia’s Role in Promoting Illiberal Governance,” examines how illiberal governance models inspired by Russian practices spread across Europe and are adapted by political actors in different domestic settings. The project focuses on the diffusion of authoritarian strategies and governance practices that weaken judicial independence, politicize courts, restrict media freedom, and reshape state institutions through loyal appointments.

The doctoral researcher will analyse the transnational dynamics of illiberal learning, looking at how domestic and international actors interact in the circulation of authoritarian governance models between Russia and Europe, and how these models are adapted to specific political, economic, and societal contexts. The position is embedded in a wider network with partner institutions in Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Poland.

The network offers joint supervision, research visits, intersectoral secondments, transferable-skills development, and a strong link between academic research and policy practice. The position is full-time and forms part of a structured doctoral training environment with mandatory research stays at academic and non-academic partner institutions.
