About this position
The University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Social Sciences is offering a doctoral researcher position in a project on education-related inequalities. The post is based in the Helsinki Institute for Demography and Population Health and is part of a Research Council of Finland funded project, Education – a Universal Solvent? Towards a Cross-Disciplinary Synthesis.
The project examines educational differences across several connected research areas: intergenerational social stratification, population health, electoral participation, and the synthesis of these research traditions. The doctoral researcher will develop a thesis within one or more of these areas and is expected to contribute to the wider project through joint research, publication activity, data infrastructure support, and communication tasks.
The research environment combines large-scale Finnish census and population register data with population-representative epidemiological cohort studies and twin studies. These data sources provide long-running individual and family-level information, and also include behavioural, clinical, and genetic information linked to register-based records. The role therefore sits at the intersection of social science, population research, and quantitative analysis.
The project is led by Hannu Lahtinen, and the successful applicant will work closely with the principal investigator and the broader research group, with opportunities for international collaboration and scientific publishing. Teaching or related activities may also be included in a limited capacity.
The Faculty of Social Sciences is presented as a large and internationally oriented research and teaching environment with a strong profile across its disciplines.
