About this position
The University of Luxembourg’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance is offering a doctoral position in the Department of Law on the legal status of ethical hackers. The PhD is embedded in the SAFEHACK (Safe Access Framework for Ethical HACKers) project, funded by the University of Luxembourg Cyber Research Hub, and focuses on the protection of ethical hackers through criminal law.
The doctoral researcher will investigate the criminal (non-)protection of casual ethical hackers and compare EU and national legislation across EU Member States and NATO states that are parties to the Budapest Convention. The project combines doctrinal legal research, comparative law, cyber policy analysis, and the development of practical outputs such as a compilation of Luxembourg legislation, assessment of legislative exemptions, identification of good models and practices, and creation of an interactive map of national laws.
The position is supervised by Professor Niovi Vavoula (Chair in Cyber Policy), with Dr Sergio Coronado serving as a member of the PhD Committee. The thesis will be undertaken at the University of Luxembourg, in a multilingual and interdisciplinary research environment with strong links to European institutions, the financial sector, and international partners. The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching small-group classes and tutorials for one to three hours per week, and will join a larger research group working on related topics in cyber policy and criminal law.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Law, especially in criminal law or IT law, and a demonstrated interest in criminal law, cybersecurity, cybercrime, critical infrastructure cybersecurity, cyber defence, and cyber sovereignty. Excellent English (C1) is required; French is an advantage, and German may also be beneficial. Candidates must also show at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis. The yearly gross salary for a doctoral researcher is EUR 44,531 for full-time work under a 36-month fixed-term contract.
