About this position

The University of Eastern Finland invites applications for one full-time Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) position in Finite Element Technology for Smooth Problems at the Department of Technical Physics, Kuopio Campus.

The doctoral project focuses on the development and application of advanced computational methods for complex continuum and multiphysics problems. The researcher will develop, mathematically analyse and implement finite element methods, apply them to challenging computational engineering problems, prepare scientific publications and complete a doctoral dissertation. Limited teaching duties of up to 5% may be included, together with participation in conferences, research visits and international collaboration.

Supervision will be provided by Assistant Professor Adam Sky at the University of Eastern Finland and Dr. Michael Neunteufel at the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics in Linz, Austria. Relevant research interests include finite element methods, numerical analysis, scientific computing, computational physics, continuum mechanics, tensor calculus and generalised continuum theories.

Applicants need a Master's degree, or equivalent qualification, in computational physics and engineering, mathematics, scientific computing, mechanical engineering or a related field and must meet the LUMETO doctoral programme admission criteria. Final-stage Master's students may apply if they complete their degree by 30 November 2026. A strong foundation in mathematics and continuum physics, scientific programming experience, preferably in Python, and good written and spoken English are required. Experience with finite element methods and programming in C++, C or Rust is advantageous.

The appointment is a three-year fixed-term position beginning 1 January 2027 or by agreement. The expected starting salary is approximately EUR 2,710–2,845 per month under the Finnish university salary system, with university staff benefits.
