About this position
The University of Eastern Finland is offering a doctoral researcher position in the Department of Technical Physics on the Kuopio Campus. The project focuses on finite element technology for smooth problems, with an emphasis on developing and applying advanced computational methods for complex continuum and multiphysics problems.
The successful candidate will work on methodological development, numerical implementation, and applications to challenging problems in computational engineering. The project combines theory and practice, bringing together mathematical analysis and software-oriented research in finite element methods. The doctoral researcher will also prepare and publish scientific results and take part in conferences, research visits, and collaboration with partner research groups.
The research is supervised by Assistant Professor Adam Sky at the University of Eastern Finland together with Dr. Michael Neunteufel from the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) in Linz, Austria. The position is part of an international research environment and includes a limited teaching contribution, alongside the main task of conducting dissertation research and completing postgraduate studies.
The role is based at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology and is framed as a three-year fixed-term doctoral researcher appointment starting 1 January 2027, or as agreed.

What's required
Applicants must be eligible for postgraduate studies and hold a Master’s degree in computational physics and engineering, mathematics, scientific computing, mechanical engineering or a related field, or have completed an applicable study programme abroad that provides eligibility for corresponding postgraduate education. Candidates must meet the student admission criteria for the LUMETO doctoral programme and have a good command of written and spoken English. Students in the final stages of their Master’s degree may apply if they complete the degree and submit the certificate by 30 November 2026. A strong foundation in mathematics and continuum physics is required, together with experience in scientific programming, preferably in Python. Experience with finite element methods, tensor calculus, continuum mechanics, generalised continuum theories, scientific computing, and programming in C++, C or Rust is an advantage.
How to apply
Apply through the electronic application form no later than 16 November 2026 at 23:59 Finnish time. Include a CV, degree certificates/diplomas, language proficiency evidence if needed, a transcript of records, a one-page motivation letter, a list of publications if available, and any other documents showing your merits.
