About this position
The GIS Centre at Lund University is seeking a doctoral student to join its research in Geographical Information Science, with a particular focus on Autonomous GIS and Spatial Intelligence. The project sits at the intersection of GIScience and artificial intelligence, exploring how large language models, GeoAI, and multi-agent systems can turn GIS into more intelligent systems that interpret spatial problems, reason about geographic information, and plan and execute geospatial workflows.
The PhD student will be based in the GIS Centre, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, where research, education, and development in GIScience are combined with expertise in geospatial analysis, digital twins, and spatial data infrastructures. The Centre’s work connects GIS and AI with real-world applications in environmental analysis, urban planning, sustainability, and related societal challenges, offering an interdisciplinary and collaborative research setting.
The doctoral research will investigate methods and frameworks for advancing autonomous geospatial systems, including geospatial reasoning with LLMs, multi-agent architectures, workflow planning and execution, integration of geographic knowledge with analytical tools, and evaluation of the reliability and quality of AI-generated spatial analyses. The project aims to contribute new scientific knowledge and methods that strengthen the foundations of intelligent and increasingly autonomous GIS systems.
The student will work closely with researchers at the GIS Centre and may collaborate with national and international partners. The role includes doctoral research leading to a thesis, participation in seminars and courses, publication-oriented research, and opportunities to present work at scientific conferences. There may also be limited teaching and departmental duties alongside the PhD studies.

What's required
Applicants must meet general third-cycle admission requirements, including a second-cycle qualification, at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 credits at second-cycle level, or equivalent knowledge. A relevant independent degree project of at least 30 higher education credits is required for the specific admission requirements. The advertised profile calls for a Master's degree in Geographic Information Science, Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field; strong knowledge of AI and machine learning including deep learning and large language models; experience with AI/ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow; strong Python programming skills; good analytical and problem-solving ability; interest in GIScience and spatial intelligence; ability to work independently and collaboratively; and good written and spoken English. Advantageous qualifications include practical experience with LLMs, agentic AI, retrieval-augmented generation, tool integration or multi-agent systems, experience with geospatial libraries such as GeoPandas, Shapely, Rasterio, PyQGIS or ArcPy, knowledge of spatial reasoning and knowledge representation, experience in computational method development and evaluation, scientific writing skills, and prior research or publications in AI, GIScience or GeoAI.
