About this position
The University of New South Wales is recruiting three Research Associates to join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team in the School of Built Environment at the UNSW Kensington Campus. Led by Scientia Associate Professor Negin Nazarian, the team is developing urban climate modelling and analysis capability within the Australian Community Climate and Earth-System Simulator (ACCESS).
The research addresses gaps in the representation of cities in national climate prediction and projection. Delivered in partnership with ACCESS-NRI through the Australian Urban Climate Research Infrastructure, the work connects with the Climate-Resilient Cities Lab, the ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather, and national and international research and data partners.
- AI/ML-based urban climate modelling: Develop machine learning and hybrid physics–ML techniques to improve urban climate parameterisation, model transferability and the accessibility of urban climate outputs.
- Urban data pipelines and evaluation: Design reproducible pipelines for urban morphology, land cover, building, vegetation and other city-descriptive datasets; benchmark simulations against observations; and develop FAIR-aligned tools for analysing, visualising and sharing outputs.
- Urban model development: Improve the representation of urban processes in CABLE and ACCESS, including scale-dependent urban canopy schemes, numerical models and workflows for representing cities and their physical processes.
Across the streams, researchers will conduct and document analyses, simulations and evaluation workflows; contribute to shared modelling frameworks using collaborative software practices; disseminate findings through publications, conferences and workshops; and collaborate with research students and national and international teams.

What's required
Applicants should hold a PhD in a related discipline and/or have relevant work experience, demonstrate the ability to undertake high-quality academic research independently with limited supervision, have a publication and conference presentation record relative to opportunity, and be able to collaborate across disciplines and communicate with diverse stakeholders. Desirable experience depends on the stream: numerical model development, land-surface or climate model code and urban canopy models; geospatial or environmental data pipelines, observational benchmarking, Python or similar, HPC and FAIR data practices; or machine learning for physical processes, hybrid physics–ML or surrogate modelling and scientific computing in Python or similar.
How to apply
Submit a CV, cover letter and a separate document addressing suitability against the selection criteria for the relevant stream(s) through the application portal. Applications sent by email will not be accepted.
