The research project focuses on revisiting the classical sphere-packing problem and applying its principles to enhance modern digital communication and signal processing systems. As a doctoral student, you will collaborate with Professor Erik Agrell (IEEE Fellow), an internationally recognized expert in the field, and work alongside colleagues to design new sphere packings (such as lattices), develop theoretical frameworks and practical algorithms, and analyze complexity and performance trade-offs in relevant applications. The project is supported by a prestigious grant from the Swedish Research Council.
Key responsibilities include tackling challenging geometric problems, publishing both fundamental and applied research results, and learning to formulate, conduct, validate, and present research findings. You will also take advanced courses within the Graduate Schools of Electrical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, and may teach in Chalmers’ Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes or perform other duties up to 20% of full time.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 or 60 credits) in Mathematics, Engineering Physics, or Electrical Engineering, or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree for those educated outside Sweden. Essential qualifications include strong knowledge in applied mathematics and mathematical programming, and excellent written and verbal English skills. Preferred experience includes combinatorics, numerical optimisation, computational geometry, and basic knowledge of digital communications and signal processing. No Swedish language requirement; English is the working language and candidates of any nationality are welcome. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
The position is fully funded from the start, with a fixed-term appointment of four years (extendable to five years with teaching duties), and a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
