About this position

Doctoral Student in Machine Learning for Quantum Error Correction at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This PhD project sits at the intersection of machine learning, quantum error correction, quantum computing, coding theory, and information theory. The goal is to develop learning-based decoders that are fast, scalable, and compatible with the strict latency and hardware constraints of practical quantum systems. The project is part of QuBriC, a European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network focused entirely on QEC, with collaboration opportunities across academic and industrial partners, including research visits to Duke University and IQM Quantum Computers.

The successful candidate will work in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers, in an international research environment with expertise in machine learning, signal processing, coding theory, and quantum systems. Research directions may include ML-based decoders for surface codes and quantum LDPC codes, combining ML with message-passing and conventional decoding, discovering new decoding strategies or code structures, and jointly optimizing codes and decoders for realistic noise models and hardware constraints.

Eligibility: a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or a closely related field; strong grades in coding/information theory, digital communications, quantum information processing, or quantum computing; strong mathematics and programming skills; and excellent English communication skills. For degrees earned outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. MSCA rules also apply: no prior doctoral degree and compliance with the mobility rule for Sweden.

Funding: fully funded for 4 years, with possible extension up to 5 years if teaching duties are included (up to 20%). The position includes a gross starting salary of about 35,725 SEK/month, full social benefits, health insurance, relocation support, and no tuition fees for PhD studies.

Application: submit the application in English via the online form on the vacancy page. Upload a CV, personal letter, thesis copies, transcripts, degree certificates, and any relevant certificates such as TOEFL results. Do not send documents by email.

Deadline: 30 November 2026.

What's required

Applicants must have a Master's degree (120 credits) or a 60-credit Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or a closely related field; for degrees earned outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong background and excellent course grades are required in at least one of coding/information theory, digital communications, quantum information processing, or quantum computing. Applicants should have strong mathematics and programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab, or similar), strong written and verbal English communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international research environment. MSCA eligibility applies: candidates must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the mobility rule (not have lived or carried out main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment).

How to apply

Prepare the application in English and upload PDF files through the application form on the vacancy page. Include a CV, personal letter, thesis copies, transcripts and degree certificates, and any relevant certificates such as TOEFL results.
