About this position

The University of Gothenburg is seeking a doctoral student in Natural Science specialising in Biology to join the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology. The department is renowned for its high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences, with a strong focus on understanding chemical and biological processes in cells and the environment. The successful candidate will join the Bojar group, which specializes in machine learning and systems glycobiology, and will be supervised by Dr. Daniel Bojar. The research project centers on developing new biochemical precision tools to monitor, enrich, and manipulate specific pools of glycans, providing new insights into subcellular trafficking and the functional relevance of glycosylation. The position involves experimental work, including culturing mammalian cells, transfection, fractionation, and measurement using flow cytometry, ELISA, glycomics, and more. The student will also use CRISPR-Cas9 and genetic engineering to create switches controlling glycosylation, and perform immunoprecipitation and enrichment for proteomics and glycoproteomics. Integration of experimental and computational methods is essential, and effective communication between these disciplines is encouraged. The Bojar group fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and encourages presenting research at international conferences and co-supervising undergraduate students. The position is fully funded by an ERC Starting Grant, with salaries set individually by the university. Doctoral studies are full-time for four years, with possible extension for departmental duties such as teaching, research, or administration. Eligibility requirements include a second-cycle (Master's) degree in a relevant natural science subject, or equivalent qualifications, and proficiency in English (minimum TOEFL scores specified). Selection will prioritize candidates with documented experience in working with mammalian cells and knowledge in glycobiology. The University of Gothenburg values diversity and equal conditions in the workplace. Applications must be submitted online by November 3, 2025. For more information, visit the Bojar lab website and the university's application portal.
