About this position

The University of Cologne, one of Europe's largest and oldest universities, is seeking a doctoral student or postdoc for research in biological physics and systems biology at the Institute for Biological Physics. This position is part of the Collaborative Research Center 1310, focusing on 'Predictability in Evolution' within the Bollenbach group. The research investigates the evolution of antibiotic resistance in microbial systems, combining molecular biology, microbiology, and physics methodologies.

Key responsibilities include performing high-throughput evolution experiments with E. coli lab strains and clinical isolates using robotic laboratory automation, analyzing evolving bacterial populations with genome barcoding assays and next-generation sequencing, conducting standardized microbial proteomics experiments, and developing theoretical models of resistance evolution in collaboration with theorists. The group offers an interactive and supportive research environment, with opportunities for advanced training and flexible working models.

Applicants should hold a very good MSc degree or doctoral degree in biological physics, quantitative biology, or a related field. A strong interest in interdisciplinary research between physics and biology is essential. Previous experience in programming, statistics, or microbiology is advantageous but not mandatory. Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently are required. The University of Cologne promotes equal opportunities and diversity, and women will be considered preferentially in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The position is available immediately and is full-time for postdocs (39.83 hours/week) or 65% for doctoral students. The contract is fixed-term until 30 September 2028, with salary based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the German public sector. Occupational health management and support for balancing work and family life are provided.

To apply, submit your application online via the University of Cologne job portal, including proof of required qualifications (without a photo) and referencing Wiss2606-05. The application deadline is 10 July 2026. For further inquiries, contact Professor Dr. Tobias Bollenbach at [email protected].
