About this position
This EPA fellowship is based at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Duluth, Minnesota, within the Risk Assessment Support division and the broader Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention research effort. The project addresses a key challenge in high-throughput toxicity testing: how to better quantify what test organisms are actually exposed to in small multi-well plate systems, where chemical partitioning, volatility, and transformation can cause measured concentrations to differ from nominal values.
The fellow will contribute to research that anchors toxicity testing to analytical measurements of chemical concentrations in test wells and supports the development of computational models that predict partitioning and fate from physicochemical properties and structure. The work also includes evaluating novel delivery strategies for difficult-to-handle chemicals in aqueous systems.
Training and research activities may include analytical method development for organic contaminants in water, chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry, extraction from environmental and biological matrices, quality assurance/quality control, predictive fate and partitioning modeling, and data processing for large, high-content datasets. The fellow may also work with aquatic organisms, biofluids, and tissue samples, and contribute to statistical analysis, figures, tables, presentations, and publications.
The mentor for this opportunity is Deon Moore at EPA.
