About this position
This research opportunity at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Duluth, Minnesota focuses on the aquatic toxicity, uptake, and partitioning of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The project examines how broad classes of PFAS behave in aquatic systems, how they accumulate in biota, and how they partition in biphasic systems such as octanol/water.
Working with EPA scientists and co-mentors Will Backe and Ian Mundy, the participant will contribute to experimental design, sampling strategy, aquatic toxicity assays, tissue collection, and data collection for water quality and biological performance. The research also involves advanced chemical analysis of PFAS in exposure systems and biological samples using chromatographic and mass spectrometric instrumentation, along with interpretation of experimental data and reporting of results.
The project is embedded in a multidisciplinary research group that includes chemists, biologists, and toxicologists. The environment emphasizes laboratory practice, QA/QC, method development, statistical analysis, and collaboration on manuscripts, reports, and scientific presentations. The overall aim is to generate data that support risk-based guidelines and ecotoxicity prediction models.
