About this position
This four-year 1+3 MRes/PhD studentship will investigate rainfall-induced slope failure risk across Great Britain's railway infrastructure, in collaboration with Network Rail and the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering.
The research will examine why clusters of embankment and cutting failures occur around the rail network. Using Network Rail's extensive databases on asset condition and performance, the project will analyze the roles of local geology, hydrogeological conditions, natural topography, drainage-system performance, and periods of high rainfall.
The project will also assess how climate change may alter slope-failure risks in the future. Network Rail data will be used to identify common factors associated with failure hotspots, followed by Centrifuge and Finite Element modelling to investigate the physical mechanisms behind these relationships and the influence of changing climate conditions.
Insights from the modelling and data analysis will support the development of machine-learning or AI approaches for identifying high-risk locations across the rail network and helping prioritize remediation. The work offers an interdisciplinary research environment combining geotechnical engineering, infrastructure resilience, hydrogeology, climate-risk analysis, numerical modelling, and artificial intelligence, with project-specific supervision from Professor Stuart Haigh.
