About this position
The University of Nottingham is inviting applications for an EPSRC PhD studentship on novel optics and artificial intelligence approaches to imaging the centre of a live, intact plant root.
Based in the Optics and Photonics Research Group within the Faculty of Engineering, the multidisciplinary project combines optical microscopy, AI, machine learning, wavefront correction, computer vision, and plant biosciences. The research will address the challenge of imaging deep inside complex plant roots, where light scattering and distortion prevent high-quality images.
The PhD researcher will develop AI-informed wavefront correction techniques tailored to plant roots, generate simulated and experimental datasets, train neural networks to predict optical distortions, and implement corrections through microscope hardware or software reconstruction algorithms. The project includes hands-on optical instrumentation, advanced imaging, coding, machine learning, and plant biology and sample handling.
Supervision will be provided by Amanda Wright and Mike Somekh from Optics and Photonics, Mike Pound from Computer Science, and Darren Wells from Plant and Crop Biophysics. The work has potential applications in sustainable agriculture and food security, including studies of plant responses to drought, salinity, waterlogging, fungal infection, and nanoparticle uptake.
Applicants should have a first-class or 2:1 degree in a relevant discipline such as Physics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or Biosciences. Optics or machine-learning knowledge is desirable but not essential; general coding skills, enthusiasm, self-motivation, resourcefulness, and teamwork are expected.
Funding will be sought competitively after a suitable candidate is identified. If awarded, it will cover UK home tuition fees and provide a UKRI stipend. The opportunity is open until filled. To apply, email a CV and supporting statement to Amanda Wright at [email protected].
