About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Metasurfaces for Machine Vision and Compact Photonics, hosted in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and linked to the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and Nanophotonics research group.
This project focuses on bilayer metasurfaces, metalenses, compact photonics, and advanced optical elements for machine vision. The research aims to overcome limitations of single-layer metasurface designs, including field-of-view vs. numerical-aperture trade-offs and off-axis aberrations, with applications in micro-endoscopy, optical metrology, automotive LiDAR, structured light, and high-fidelity imaging.
You will work with computational electromagnetic modelling, inverse design-for-manufacturing, nanofabrication, machine learning and AI, and electron and optical microscopy. The project is embedded in a strong photonics environment with extensive laboratory infrastructure and training at Southampton.
Funding: competition-funded PhD project supported by EPSRC. Funding opportunities are available for UK and international students. The post notes that Horizon Europe fee waivers may cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students.
Eligibility: UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in physics, optics and photonics, nanomaterials science, or a related discipline. English language qualification may be required depending on your background.
How to apply: submit an online application via the University of Southampton route, selecting Research, 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and PhD Electronic & Electrical Engineering (7092). Include your CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and any required English language evidence. Add the supervisor name in section 2.
Deadline: 31 August 2027. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is recommended.
