ESRC funded PhD: Notions of ‘family’ in neonatal care – Accounting for family diversity in contemporary society University of Leicester in United Kingdom

The University of Leicester, in partnership with the Midlands Graduate School ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership and Bliss, the UK’s leading charity for babies born needing neonatal care, invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship. This opportunity is designed for candidates interested in exploring the complex notions of ‘family’ within neonatal care, with a particular focus on family diversity in contemporary UK society.

The studentship aims to extend analysis of family-centred care beyond traditional biomedical approaches by applying a sociological lens. Using qualitative research methods such as ethnography, narrative interviews, and creative techniques, the project will investigate the assumptions underpinning the organisation and delivery of neonatal care and how these shape the experiences of diverse families. The research will contribute to Bliss’ ongoing work addressing health inequalities in neonatal care and provide the student with valuable experience in third sector collaboration and health policy influence.

Supervision will be provided by Professor Nicola Mackintosh, Professor Nicky Hudson (Loughborough University), Dr. Julie Roberts, and Dr. Eilis Boyle, Policy & Research Officer at Bliss. The student will have the opportunity to shape the final focus of the project in dialogue with supervisors, ensuring a tailored and impactful research experience.

The ESRC studentship covers tuition fees at the home rate, a maintenance stipend, extensive support for research training, and research activity support grants. Both home and international applicants are eligible for support. The studentship will commence in October 2026 and last for 3.5 to 4 years, depending on prior training.

Applicants must hold a UK undergraduate degree in a relevant subject or an equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas institution. Those applying to the 1-year MSc + 3.5-year PhD route should hold or expect to hold an undergraduate degree or overseas equivalent. University of Leicester English language requirements apply. UK, EU, and international applicants are welcome.
