About this position
This fellowship at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health places participants in a regulatory science research environment focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning for medical devices. The project addresses the safety and effectiveness of AI/ML-enabled devices across healthcare uses such as image processing, disease detection, diagnosis, and therapeutic monitoring.
Working under FDA mentorship, the fellow will engage with research challenges at the intersection of AI and medical device regulation. The project specifically targets issues such as limited-data algorithm training, synthetic data evaluation, algorithmic bias minimization, uncertainty quantification, evaluation of continuously learning systems, and post-market monitoring of adaptive models.
The opportunity is hosted by the FDA CDRH in White Oak, Maryland, within ORISE Research Participation Programs. The environment is designed for students and recent graduates to contribute to project-specific research while building expertise in regulatory science and the development and evaluation of AI-enabled medical technologies.
Mentorship is provided by Ravi Samala and Aldo Badano.
