About this position
This postdoctoral research opportunity is based in the Division of Biology, Chemistry and Materials Science within the Office of Science and Engineering Labs at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, Maryland. The project addresses biofilms associated with medical device-related infections, with a focus on understanding how biofilms form on device surfaces and how they can be detected and controlled.
The fellow will work on methods for detecting biofilms on medical devices, producing reproducible biofilm growth on devices and device surrogates, and evaluating antimicrobials aimed at preventing biofouling. The research also includes growing multi-species biofilms on medically relevant materials and on materials with complex geometries. Experimental work will involve analytical methods in microbiology and biochemistry, with opportunities to develop skills in troubleshooting biofilm growth methods, data analysis, result interpretation, and scientific communication.
The mentors for the opportunity are Sara Linden and Ruchi Pandey at FDA CDRH. The appointment is in a federal research environment focused on device science and materials-related biological problems, offering experience across biology, chemistry, and medical device research.
