About this position
This postdoctoral fellowship is based at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) in Jefferson, Arkansas. The project sits within the FDA’s regulatory science mission and focuses on new approach methodologies (NAMs) for human-relevant safety assessment.
The research examines donor variability in human respiratory toxicity responses to chemical irritants using air–liquid interface (ALI) airway epithelial cultures. The fellow will work on a project aimed at improving predictive toxicology and reducing reliance on animal testing by generating data that support human-relevant alternative testing strategies.
The role involves close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, including biostatisticians, computational toxicologists, and physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelers. The fellow will contribute to experimental design discussions, help generate datasets for downstream analysis, and take part in work that supports dose–response modelling, in vitro–to–in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE), and predictive toxicological framework development.
Research training will cover laboratory and analytical methods used in respiratory toxicology and alternative testing. The fellow will gain experience with advanced cell culture, ALI airway systems, aerosol exposure technologies, toxicological assays, next-generation sequencing, and data analysis approaches. The project is positioned within a regulatory science environment where the fellow will also develop scientific writing, presentation, and critical-thinking skills.
The named mentor for the opportunity is Yiying Wang at FDA NCTR.
